Seniors Competitions & Matches

We welcome and encourage all members of the Seniors Section to play as regularly as possible in our Thursday events. However, we do require our members to have played in at least four Thursday Stableford, Medal, or Fun competitions in the previous twelve months before they will become eligible to win one of our “major” (Honours Board) competitions.

1. Summer Singles Competition
A 2-ball Match Play format open to all members of the Senior Section and drawn around April, with the final to be played by mid October. It is an open draw, made in the clubhouse on a Thursday.

RULES:
2-ball match play, full handicap allowance and played off the Yellow/Red tees (using Mens and Ladies stroke indices). First round losers are entered into the Summer Plate automatically, unless they opt out. The competition is played for the ‘Batchelor Niblick’ donated by Tony Batchelor.

2. Summer Drawn Pairs Competition
A 4-ball better ball match play format, open to all members of the Senior Section and drawn around April, with the final to be played by mid October. It is an open draw, made in the clubhouse on a Thursday.

RULES:

4-ball better ball, 90% handicap difference taken from the player with the lowest handicap, played off the Yellow/Red tees. In all matches, shots must be taken off the YELLOW stroke index – that includes the Ladies.

The competition is played for the ‘Captains Driver’ donated by Tony Batchelor and John Jeffrey.

3. Summer Plate Singles Competition
A 2-ball match play format open to all members who enter the Summer Singles Competition, but are knocked out in the first round. The draw takes place as soon as all first round losers in the Singles Competition are known. The competition is to be completed by Mid October. It is an open draw, made in the clubhouse on a Thursday.

RULES:
2-ball match play, played off Yellow/Red tees with full handicap allowance.
The competition is played for the ‘Summer Plate’ donated by Ian Dyke.

4. Ladies Invitation Pairs Competition
The format is Foursomes with the Ladies inviting their male colleagues to join them in order that each team consists of a Lady and Gentleman member of the Seniors Section. Husbands and wives are not allowed to play together. And Ladies must choose a new (not previously invited) Invitation partner each year – unless they are defending their title from the previous year.
The draw is organised by the Ladies representative on the Committee. It takes place in order that the competition can commence by May 1st and the final played by mid October. It is an open draw, made in the clubhouse on a Thursday.

RULES:
Foursomes (alternate shots). Men drive the odd numbered holes, Ladies the evens. Played off the Yellow/Red tees, with Ladies using the yellow tee indices. Handicap allowance is ½ the difference of the combined handicaps.
The competition is played for the Ladies Invitation Cup donated by Charles Wilson – runners-up receive a Trophy donated by David Locke.

5. Winter Drawn Pairs Competition
The format is Greensomes, open to all members of the Senior Section and drawn to commence from mid October, with the final to be played by 31st March. It is an open draw, made in the clubhouse on a Thursday. The drawn pairs have one low handicap member and one high handicap member, and the split is worked out when the entry list closes.

RULES:
Greensomes format played off the Yellow/Red tees. All four players drive, one ball per team is selected and then it’s alternate shots. Handicap allowance is 60% of the lower handicap and 40% of the higher handicap. In all matches, shots must be taken off the YELLOW stroke index – that includes the Ladies.
The competition is played for the Winter Drawn Pairs Cup donated by Brian Pounds and Derek McAllum.

6. Eclectic Competition
The competition is run in conjunction with the official monthly individual medal and stableford rounds from February to December inclusive; open to all members of the Senior Section.

RULES:
The competition is run using 2/3 as the handicap allowance.
The competition is played for a Cut Glass Decanter Trophy donated by Geoff Mullin. The Ladies, in addition, play for a Shield donated by Arnold Kingston.

7. Super Six Competition.
The competition is run in conjunction with the official monthly Stableford rounds from January to December inclusive, and is open to all members of the Seniors Section. The winner is the player who produces the six best Stableford scores from the qualifying rounds. The competition is played for the ‘Clock’, which hangs in the clubhouse and is inscribed with the winner’s name. It was built and donated by Doug Parsons.

In addition, the best seven players are given a complimentary entrance into Opens during the season – the top four to one Open (currently Dale Hill) and the next best three to another Open (currently Westerham). As these Opens are men-only competitions, any ladies who come in the top seven will be given the monetary equivalent in cash or a pro-shop voucher. Or if two or more ladies come in the top seven, they can be entered into a Mixed or Ladies Open if they wish.

8. Super Senior Cup
The competition is run in conjunction with the official monthly stableford rounds from February to December inclusive; open to all members of the Senior Section, who are aged 70 or over on the date of the first qualifier. The winner is the player who produces the six best rounds from the qualifying rounds.
The competition is played for a Cup donated by Brian Pounds.

9. Individual Handicap Trophy
This tournament is held on a Medal qualifying day, and is open to ALL Seniors. The Trophy is awarded to the best NET score (gross medal score less current playing handicap).
The trophy is a ‘Rosebowl’ donated by Trevor Peckham and Tony Kelly.

10. Senior Mens Scratch Championship
Open to all members of the Seniors section, and played at a date determined by the Seniors Captain. To be played in conjunction with a qualifying medal competition.

RULES:
The format is a medal round off the White tees. The Winner and Seniors Champion is the member with the best gross score.
The trophy is a Claret Jug donated by Guy Pearce and Ian Dyke.

11. Senior Ladies Scratch Championship
Open to all members of the Seniors section, and played at a date determined by the Seniors Captain. To be played in conjunction with a qualifying medal competition.

RULES:
The format is a medal round off the Black tees. The Winner and Seniors Champion is the member with the best gross score.
The trophy is a Cut Glass Bowl donated by Len Barlow and Tony Rigg.

12. Sweetwoods Old Guys and Girls Shield (SOGGS)
The format is a 4 ball better ball team competition between a Seniors mens team and a Seniors ladies team.
The Ladies team will be chosen by the ladies representative on the Committee, and the Mens team in the usual way as per club matches. The team numbers will be determined by how many ladies are free to play on the date agreed.

RULES:
Full handicap allowance, plus one for the ladies; allowance off Yellow and Red indices respectively. The result will be determined on the aggregate number of holes won per side.
The trophy is a Shield donated by Brian Reeve.

13. Seniors Men vs Main Club Ladies Shield

A Ladies main club team is challenged by a Seniors men team in a 4 ball better ball format.

RULES:

Format is 4-ball better ball, standard match play, with 90% handicap adjustment. Ladies receive one extra shot to their handicap before the 90% adjustment.  Men play from yellow tees and indices, ladies play from red tees and indices.  The trophy is a Shield donated by John Davey.

14. The Ultimate Cup
A Seniors team is challenged by a Juniors team in a 4 ball better ball format.
The trophy is a Cup donated by Brian Pounds.

15. The Captain’s Day Trophy
The format is a Stableford qualifier with the Captain’s Day Trophy given to the overall winner with the highest number of stableford points. Presented on the same day/evening.
The trophy is a Claret Jug donated by Jack Hay.

16. Winter Texas Scramble Trophy
This competition comprises of teams of three players who compete for the Texas Scramble Trophy. The winning team will achieve the lowest team score, after a combined handicap adjustment. The trophy is a Shield donated by John Mitchell.
